South32 announced this morning that it will construct a nine-acre complex in the city of Nogales to house the remote operations center for its Hermosa mining project.
Formerly referred to as IROC (“integrated remote operations center”), the facility will now be called ‘Centro.’ Centro will be located off the I-19 near the Mariposa Industrial Park, with construction expected to begin by the end of the year.
“Designed as a commercial building with an office-like setting, Centro will accommodate employees and the automation technology needed to remotely monitor and operate some of the underground and surface equipment located at the mine site,” South32 said in this morning’s press release. “Centro will host around 200 full-time employees over several shifts in a 24-hour period.”
