Philip Gekas, 75, of Elgin has been identified as the cyclist killed Tuesday while riding eastbound on State Highway 82 near Rain Valley, according to the Department of Public Safety.
A Sonoita resident was cited for not giving proper distance to the cyclist. The violation, A.R.S. § 28-735, is the state’s “three-foot passing law” for motorists overtaking bicycles. The violation carries with it a civil penalty of up to $1,000.
The accident occurred at 11:43 a.m. Gekas was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson and pronounced dead at 2:41 p.m.
No criminal charges were filed.
