Remembering September 11, 2001

This poem was written by Patti Kelly of Canelo on the first anniversary of the 9/11 attack. It was published in the Sept. 11, 2002 Special Section of The Bulletin, a weekly newspaper in Sonoita at that time. Her sentiments resonate during these troubling times as our community tries to cope with to today’s challenges and remind us that this too will pass. Patti lost a courageous five-month battle with cancer November 30, 2010.

Shall I fear a stranger?

Shall I mistrust a friend?

Shall I cower in terror,

Shall I huddle within?

I shall rise above anger,

I shall hold my head high,

I shall pledge  my all glance,

Dream of peace ‘til I die.

I shall cherish my freedom,

I shall dwell on this sod.

I shall weep for the heroes,

I shall pray to my God.
