Halloween came early to Elgin this past Saturday at the Douglas Orchard on Lower Elgin Road.

Along with some friends, we wondered about the event, taking in the joy and exuberance of the families with their energetic youngsters. The precious little tripping hazards were a bit of a challenge for those of us well past our “sell by” dates and sporting after-market body parts as they excitedly dashed about in the dark, waving their little glow sticks.

But with all of the activities and wonderfully scary displays, those challenges were well worthwhile. The Tucson rock band Birds and Arrows entertained all with their original music as the moon rose behind their platform, the setting sun highlighting the Mustang Mountains made the whole experience a visual feast.

Speaking of feast, two food trucks and a hot chocolate stand were there to keep all well-fed and hydrated. Of course, no Halloween experience is complete without some spooky encounters, and those were in full force when we took the “hike in the woods.” The dimly lit and well-designed trail led through the dark trees of the orchard, decorated with a plethora of frights. Spiders, little demons and the occasional goblin jumping out at us enhanced the experience. Listening to the little ones with their startled squeals followed by laughter brought about chuckles from us as we tried to maintain our composure while dodging those same goblins without screaming too loudly. We were mature adults after all.

The event was built and staffed by many local high school students and their families. Lena Stephens and Kelly Rangel, the creators of this event, along with the help of friends and neighbors made this a true Halloween Happening. My hat is off to them for giving the local families and community such a wonderful experience.
