Pastor Losi to leave Patagonia

PCUMC Pastor Losi Koloto, daughter Marion and wife Nikki feel a lot of love for Patagonia as they prepare to leave town for a new full-time assignment in Show Low beginning July 1. Photo by Linda Jade Fong

Itโ€™s only been less than a year and the response to the news was emotional for everyone.

The Patagonia Community United Methodist Churchโ€™s popular new pastor Losi Koloto and its congregation were caught off-guard last month by an unexpected announcement from the Methodist Church bishop for Arizona that Pastor Koloto has been appointed to another position…away from Patagonia.

The Pastor’s position here in Patagonia is half-time. โ€œPastor Losi,โ€ as he is warmly known, will move to a church in Show Low, which provides a full-time opportunity.

The Kolotos’ 14-year-old daughter, Marion, said sheโ€™s loved attending Patagonia High and had been looking forward to her second season on the volleyball team. Her mother, Nikki, had been commuting from California and was eagerly anticipating living full-time in Patagonia.

Pastor Losi is known to his 3,000 Facebook friends for posting regular videos of walking through town from the parsonage to the church.

โ€œI was called to serve,โ€ Pastor Losi said. “Serve God, my first love, and my family. Then Patagonia became a love that found a home in me and became part of who I am, my experience, my reward. [Patagonia is] full of peace and beauty. Iโ€™m leaving the town, but not that love.โ€

A new pastor for PCUMC, Katrina Pahulu, will arrive July 1 from Mesquite, Nevada. This will be her first pastoral charge.

A farewell potluck for Pastor Losi will be held at Thurber Hall on Sunday, June 22 at 11:30am. Everyone is welcome to come help send off the Koloto family as they head off in their car named โ€œBlessingโ€ to their new adventure.

Forest Service opens long-promised new road, restoring access to public lands

Meadow Valley road construction is now complete. Photo courtesy USDA Forest Service

The Forest Service has completed construction of a new road restoring vehicle access to 34,000 acres of public lands at the north end of the San Rafael Valley.

Public access by vehicle to Forest Service land in Meadow Valley and the Boghole Cienega area located at the north end of the San Rafael Valley has been blocked by private landowners since July 2018.

“Although hunters, birders, hikers and other recreationalists could still enter the area by foot, all vehicular traffic was terminated,” local resident Jac Heiss wrote in an op-ed piece published last October in the PRT. “As a result, anyone incapable of walking several miles across unimproved pathways was essentially denied access.”

Here’s the official announcement from the Forest Service:

May 26, 2025 – PUBLIC ACCESS NOTIFICATION

North of the San Rafael Valley is a newly constructed National Forest System road in the Patagonia Mountains. Both NFSR 4630 and NFSR 765, directly off NFSR 58, are modified by this new construction. NFSR 4630 is a 3.74-mile ML2 road that connects to NFSR 765 and provides access to over 34,000 acres of land in Meadow Valley and Boghole Cienega. The forest roads in this area traverse the unique mountain range and grassland, inviting you to explore nature, history, and recreation opportunities.

This project falls under the Southwestern Region Fiscal year 2022 Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) and is part of multi-year funded projects to improve Sierra Vista recreation access, roads, and trails.

Caputo speaks

Renowned author and wintertime Patagonia resident Phil Caputo gave a talk at Cady Hall in late March. The event, produced by the Patagonia Public Library and attended by over 90 folks, was a big hit. We published PRT contributing writer Mary Tolena’s report on the event in our May issue, which you can read here. Now the Library has posted video of the talk, which we’re sharing below. Enjoy!

Participants sought for Hermosa Project CPBA ‘engagement sessions’

Media release:

Representatives from Santa Cruz County, Nogales, Patagonia, and South32 (the signatories) are working to develop a Community Protection and Benefit Agreement (CPBA) for the Hermosa project. Through focused working sessions, the group is creating an agreement that ensures the project is developed, operated, and closed with sustainable protections and benefits for the community.

The CPBA signatories hosted public listening sessions on March 17 (in Patagonia) and 18 (in Nogales).  Feedback received during these sessions and on the CPBA website indicates that residents would like to have more engagement, particularly in the form of smaller group discussions focused on topics of specific interest.

Based on this feedback, the signatories plan to sponsor limited attendance, topic-specific groups of interested parties on 3 topics on June 16 and 17 (time and location TBD):

  *   emergency services,
  *   nature-based restorative economic development, and
  *   education

If you are interested in participating in a particular topic session, please visit cpba-hermosa.org to express your interest and find additional information. Due to the need to keep the groups to a limited size for productive dialogue, the signatories will select interested participants by consensus from those invited as well as others interested.  These groups are intended to provide an opportunity for individuals seeking to work collaboratively and in a solution-oriented spirit.
