Press Release

The Nogales Santa Cruz County Library system, in collaboration with the Nogales Santa Cruz County Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Library (“Library Fans”), will host a county-wide celebration of the first 100 years of the public library system on Thursday, October 5, 2023. All members of the Santa Cruz County community are invited to participate in this once-in-a-100-years event.

ln December, a time capsule will be buried with objects from the last 100 years in Santa Cruz County. Community members are encouraged to participate by gifting the library with any small object that we could place in the time capsule. The capsule must be airtight so that it lasts the next 100 years, to be opened in 2123. How do we want to be remembered?

The organizations would also like to put a small sculpture of a reader at the entrance of the Nogales Library to mark the location of the time capsule. Monetary donations are also being collected to put toward the purchase of the sculpture celebrating the readers and learners of Santa Cruz County.

The small statue is being made by local sculptor Gary Lee Price, and will be purchased from the K. Newby Gallery in Tubac for a cost of $5,300. Contributors’ names and their donations will also be recorded and secured in the time capsule.

Contributions can be sent to “Friends of the Library” 518 N. Grand Avenue, Nogales, AZ 85621. Please make checks payable to “Library Fans”. Contact Library Director, Danitza Lopez for any questions about the program at (520) 287-2911 or email.
