Beautifying Patagonia as a community
I am the secretary at the Patagonia Community Church. A few months ago, I went into a part of the church that had been ignored and forgotten about for years. I got myself into a tizzy. How could a church allow this to happen? I fumed about it for a few days and then realized I needed to take my anger and put it into something positive.
The Patagonia Community United Methodist is my church; I have been a member for 30 years. I take pride in the church on the corner, also known as the “Jewel Box Church” for its many beautiful stained-glass windows.
I approached the pastor of the Community Church, Pastor Katrina Pahulu, about organizing a cleanup day at the church. We put a few thoughts together and went to the head of the trustees, Ron Pitt. We were off and running with an approval to move forward. I am a “list person,” I make a list for everything. Something is satisfying when you are able to cross things off the list. We chose a day, started announcing it and I started making lists.
I saw the Patagonia Town Manager, Ron Robinson, early in the planning asking for assistance in disposing of things we no longer needed. Ron not only agreed to help, but wanted to jump on board as a community. The town of Patagonia gave four free days of dump pickup. The theme of our efforts was titled: Beautify Patagonia Together as a Community!
So for several weeks Beautify Patagonia become alive! The community pitching in where and how they could. It was literally “the talk of the town!”
Saturday, March 21, was the official cleanup day at the Community Church. We accomplished so much with so many pitching in and helping. The sanctuary of the Community Church has so much wood and every piece of that wood was oiled, including the two wooden doors leading outside. Those wooden doors also got much-needed mechanical attention. We added an enormous pile for the free dump pickup.
Thank you Town Manager Ron Robinson, and the ladies and gentlemen of the town who helped in so many ways. Thank you Patagonia Community United Methodist Church for supporting this project and seeing it to the end. Thank you Patagonia Community for taking this effort to heart and doing your part to participate. Thank you Red Mountain Foods for helping with the food we served.
We live in a wonderful community. We care and help each other.
The Jewel Box Church on the corner is beautiful! Come and visit.
We have hope that “Beautify Patagonia as a Community” becomes an annual event.

Wide loads, big problems
It would seem to me to solve the wide load problems on Highway 83 would be to require wide loads to go only at night and to allow the rest of the traffic during the day. A vehicle count on 83 would support the fact that most vehicles would be on 83 during the day.
