I am currently a member of the recently renamed Sonoita-Elgin Planning and Preservation Committee. I feel my input and opinion represents the ideals of the people who have come to call this area home. I am not interested in creating a “build it and they will come” scenario. Rather, my hope is that we can address the needs and wants of our current residents and protect, maintain and enjoy what this area has to offer. My interest in being a part of this committee is because we imagine a future of rural living, dark skies, low commuter traffic, open spaces and a climate that exemplifies the biodiversity of this area.
Residents of Sonoita and Elgin know that this is a special place. It is unique in its landscape, climate, ranching history and lifestyle, yet close enough to other municipalities to acquire necessary goods, medical and other services not available locally. We understood when deciding to move here that shopping, services and other amenities were limited, we were but willing to trade in our hectic lifestyle so that we could enjoy something different and be part of a small ranching and agricultural community.
The reality is that change is coming. As seen by recent commercial developments and large parcels up for sale, investors and other folks are taking notice of our area and see it as a growth opportunity. Who can fault current land/property owners for making a profit by selling now to take advantage of the market? And who are we to dictate how new buyers can use property already zoned for various purposes?
Digging in our heels and crossing our arms will not deter people from coming here. We can work together to express and create a proposed future for our area. An overlay of the zoned areas can tell investors what our visions and desires are for our community.
By our community coming together to create an overlay of suggested or desired usage for the open spaces currently on the market, it will help future buyers to decide if the considered investment is a good match for their development vision, both purpose and aesthetics.
