The Sonoita-Elgin Fire District will hold its regular monthly board meeting on Monday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m. in the meeting room at the station house, 3173 N. Highway 83 in Sonoita. The meeting is open to the public and also available via Zoom, meeting ID 839 6668 2690.

Agenda items include:

  • An update on the status of Santa Cruz County’s litigation and recovery efforts related to the theft of public funds by former County Treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr.
  • Presentation, discussion and possible action recognizing United Firefighters of Sonoita, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 5597, as the official representative body for full-time SEFD firefighters.
  • Presentation, discussion and possible action on a funding request of up to $75,000 for starting and completing Phase I of the Elgin Fire Resources Facility.
  • Presentation, discussion and possible action on the recruitment and selection of a candidate to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of board member Robert Garber.
  • Presentation, discussion and possible action on a request by the Calabasas Alliance and University of Arizona to install a Purple Air monitor on first district property to assist with air quality research related to the South32 Hermosa mine.
  • The board might vote to enter executive session to discuss employment matters concerning chief Marc Meredith. Any action arising from the session would take place in public (open) session.
