E-Newsletter

We do not post any notices in the PRT Newsletter for events that are more than three weeks away. Flyers for nonprofits, community organizations and fundraisers will be accepted. Submissions and or questions should be in email form or a word document to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Tuesday, 10 a.m. 

Community Member In Need of a Life Saving Kidney Donation

Long time Patagonia resident, Terra Wright, is in end stage kidney failure. Terra is in need of a kidney transplant. She and her family had high hopes that her sister would be able to donate her kidney, but they recently received the news that she is not a match. Terra is hoping that someone in our community may be a match. “If there is anyone out there that would be willing to test, or if you know somebody that would and could potentially donate a kidney to me, it would be the greatest gift I could ever receive in this life. I’m not one to ask for prayers, but I really need them at this time.” For information regarding the living donor program , please visit bannertucson.donorscreen.org. Nominate your Neighbor

Photo by Marion Vendituoli Mary Moran, who was named one of the PRT’s Community Contributors last year, established the Sonoita Food locker and helped organize the free produce distribution outside the Sonoita Post Office. Do you know someone who is making exceptional contributions in our communities? Nominate them for the PRT Good Neighbor Award.

Let’s give our good neighbors a SHOUT OUT! Please send an email including your name and contact info, along with the name and contact info of the nominated neighbor. Please specify if they are a adult or youth and your reason for nominating them. Email prteditor@gmail.com with your nomination.

PRT Wins Statewide Award

We are very proud to announce that the PRT won second place for newspapers with under 3500 circulation in our first ever Arizona Newspapers Association journalism contest. Reporters Kat Crockett and Marion Vendituoli won this award for a series of four articles on the Hermosa Project. We’re confident that this is the first of many more awards to come!

SAACA Sky Islands Artisan Market

84th Annual Sonoita Quarter Horse Show

Photo by Marion Vendituoli A competitor in the 84th annual Sonoita American Quarter Horse Show, the oldest quarter horse show in the world, rides her pattern between raindrops on Saturday, Oct. 8. The three day show was a success despite several lightning and rain delays caused by the unusual weather pattern that has brought more than an inch of rain to parts of Santa Cruz County over the last week.

Second Saturday Sonoita

Photo by Marion Vendituoli Jen Howard, of Sonoita, sells her animal artwork at Second Saturday Sonoita, on Oct. 12. The event is held monthly at the Coop, 3266 Hwy 82, Sonoita. Organized by Lori Johnson, of Sunset Ride Wine, the indoor event features local winemakers, local catering, live music and a dozen crafters and artists. The next second Saturday will take place Nov. 12, 11a.m. – 5p.m.

Recycling Task Force to Halt Monthly Collections

A Note From The Patagonia Museum

The Patagonia Museum will host a workday at the Lochiel Schoolhouse on Friday, October 14, from 10 am to 2 pm. Please bring water, lunch and gloves. There are a variety of chores with variable skill levels to be completed. This is also a good time to tour the site with a brief historical introduction included. On Friday, October 21, at 6 pm, the Patagonia Creative Arts Association will host another Art + History Show at the Museum. Local artist Jill Johnson will display her artwork. Light refreshments will be available. On Saturday, October 22, from 1 pm to 3 pm, at the museum, the Santa Cruz Cowbelles will celebrate their 75th Anniversary as an organization. Light refreshments will be available. The Mata Ortiz Bus Tour scheduled for November 8-10 has a few remaining seats available.

Upcoming Events in Our Community

Oct. 14 6pm – At The Tin Shed Theater – KIDS FREE Movie showing of My Neighbor Totoro This acclaimed animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

Coffee with the Chief Stop by the Sonoita-Elgin Fire station on Saturday, October 29 from 9 to 10:30a.m. to enjoy a cup of coffee and chat informally with Chief Meredith. Information about the latest at the department, upcoming activities and items of importance to the community will be available.

Nov. 10 – 9a.m. Veterans Day at Elgin School – Elgin School invites the community to its annual Veterans Day Celebration.

Community School Information

Patagonia High School presents, Café Murder! A murder mystery interactive dinner theatre! Tickets will go on sale Mon., Oct. 3 in the school office. Production dates are Tue. & Wed. Oct. 25 and at 5pm. There will be a limited number of seats available for each show, so buy your tickets early! There will be NO sales at the door! Tickets are $10 individually or $50 for an entire table (seats 6 to a round table). Dinner will include 3 courses and a beverage. Contact Journee Hayes with any questions.

Items of Interest in Our Community

Non Perishable Food Drive – Crossroads Mission Nogales is holding a non-perishable food drive in October to stock its food pantry. This is an urgent need. Crossroads Mission Nogales feeds over 100 meals daily plus provide emergency food bags/shelter to individuals and families in need. Crossroads Mission is the only homeless shelter, addiction program and domestic abuse shelter in Santa Cruz County, AZ.  Non perishable food items like canned soup, vegetables, tuna. chili, pasta, rice, beans, etc. can be dropped off at the Crossroads Mission Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm. For more information – Crossroads Nogales Mission

Sonoita has a very small “billiards club”. We generally try to get together to play pool every two weeks, but it’s pretty informal and sometimes we’ll skip a week and pick up again on an off week. Volunteer Opportunity

Crossroads Mission Nogales will serve their annual Thanksgiving Dinner to hundreds of families on SAT. NOVEMBER 19. If you’d like to help serve those in need a Thanksgiving meal plus provide food boxes, please go to the website for additional information. Volunteer Coordinator Victoria Vanderhoof will contact you. Church and service groups are welcome with open arms. Crossroads Mission Nogales is the only homeless / addiction recovery center in Santa Cruz County. There are two volunteer shifts:

*8am to 11am  (cook, serve food, distribute food boxes) *11am to 2pm  (serve food, distribute food boxes, clean up)
