Andres Cuevas will take over as head volleyball coach, David Clovesko-Wharton takes the helm as soccer coach, and Michele Shadrick will be the new girls basketball coach for the 2024-25 school year.

PUHS Athletic Director Nate Porter is enthused not only by the new coaching hires but also by a busy off-season athletic program at the high school. Summer Soccer Under the Lights continues twice a week through the end of June. Summer Boys and Girls Basketball programs are being held at the high school through the third week of July, and Summer Baseball will begin on July 8. โ€œThis is the best summer program weโ€™ve been able to put together,โ€ Porter said. Click here to read Dave Lumia’s full report.

Today is Juneteenth

Today, June 19, celebrates Juneteenth, a federal holiday. Juneteenth (short for โ€œJune Nineteenthโ€) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troopsโ€™ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

36 well-taken-care-of dogs in Rio Rico are urgently seeking a new home as their owner sold their home and is moving on June 30. Currently, the dogs are living outside in extreme heat as local animal rescues scramble to find the dogs’ foster or permanent homes. The County animal shelter is full and as “owner surrender,” these dogs will most likely be euthanized.

“Out of the 36 dogs, 17 have found homes, we have 19 sweet dogs left to find homes for,” Said Bree Kishman, Director of Hope of Deliverance Rescue. “These dogs are healthy, sweet, and great with other dogs. They are all 20-30lbs. If you can foster or want to adopt, please contact me ASAP. The 19 remaining dogs have ten days to find homes. This is an urgent plea.”
