AZ Ports of Entry set to Reopen
Santa Cruz County, Arizona – The Nogales Morley Pedestrian Port of Entry gate will reopen on Jan. 4, 2024, at 10am. The Lukeville – Sonoyta Port of Entry will reopen on Jan. 4, 2024, at 6am.
Board to Discuss 4-Day Week Schedule for Patagonia School District
The Governing Board of the Patagonia School District (PSD) will decide on Jan. 17 whether the elementary and high schools will go to a four-day week starting in Fall 2024. Public hearings are scheduled for January 10 at 5pm and January 16 at 5pm. Both meetings will be held in the high school cafeteria. The Governing Board will then meet on January 17 at 3pm to decide the issue. AZ Game and Fish Dept. Begins Aerial Surveys
AZ Game and Fish Dept. have begun surveys by air of deer & javelina populations in SE AZ start today. Low-flying aircraft may be seen, through Jan. 23. The surveys are used for assessing the health of big game populations. Pursuing wildlife with aircraft is otherwise illegal. Please report violators to 800-352-0700.
County To Host Meeting, Public Survey, Site Map to Obtain Public Input Regarding Cuisine Tourism Initiative
SC County will be hosting a community meeting on Jan. 16, 6pm at the Elgin Elementary School Gym in Elgin, requesting community input through an online survey as well as providing a SiteMap to receive community input regarding the Cuisine Tourism Project currently being researched for Sonoita AZ. Paton Center Takes Steps to Stop Spread of Avian Pox
The Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds will be puling all of the seed feeding equipment due to another outbreak of Avian Pox. The center hopes to stop the spread by limiting the exposure and contact due to the close proximity the birds have to each other at the feeders. Avian Pox is very contagious and can infect almost any species of passerine family birds. This disease will hopefully run its course within two weeks. The Center will continue to keep all of the hummingbird feeders clean and filled each day and will be open with regular hours.
ADEQ Hosts Upcoming Public Hearing Meeting in Patagonia Regarding South32 Permit
On January 11, at 6pm, The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will host a public hearing at the Patagonia High School. The purpose of this meeting is to receive comments from concerned citizens about the renewal of a permit to allow South 32 to discharge treated mine-affected waters from their Hermosa site in the Patagonia Mountains. The previous permit expired in January 2023.

A Guide to New Year’s Resolutions

Fact: New Year’s resolutions are for suckers. You make them, you break them and by February you are sitting in your truck at the post office digging the last peanut M&M out of the crack in the seat. So much for the ‘no sugar’ thing. If you still feel the need to indulge this age old tradition, here’s a guide for your resolution needs…

The PRT is published on the first Friday of every month (except July and September) and is available at these distribution points while supplies last.
Submitting Community Events to the PRT
The PRT is committed to sharing details and information about upcoming community events with our readers at no cost in our weekly e-newsletter. Due to the large number of submissions, the PRT will no longer be able to post each and every poster in our newsletter. We will share a link to your event page or poster, or a brief description of each event. Each week we will post one or two event flyers. Please share your events via email at least one week prior to the event date. Poster submissions require a JPEG format along with a brief typed description about the event in your email to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Monday, 5pm.

Jan. 20: 10:30am The Patagonia Museum will meet in the Patagonia Public Library. The brief business meeting will include the annual election of officers, review of the 2024 budget and financial reports and project updates. Dr. John Langellier, our guest speaker, will speak on the Buffalo Soldiers Chaplin and his latest book, More Work Than Glory: Buffalo Soldiers in the United States Army, 1866-1916. Jan. 27: – 2pm – The Frances Causey documentary film, Coronado: The New Evidence, will be shown. The film documents the discovery of artifacts from the 1540-1542 Coronado Expedition through Santa Cruz County including the first established Spanish colony and first successful Native American revolt in what is now the United States. Tickets are $15 at the Patagonia Trading Post. $20 at the door. Doors open at 1pm.
