The 2024 PRT “My Furry Valentine” photo contest is underway as we celebrate our companion animals and the unconditional love they bring to our lives. It’s easy to participate. Please submit your photo and entry info to prtasted@gmail.com by Friday, February 9, 2024, to be considered. There are TWO DAYS LEFT to send in your photos.
Photo Rules: Participants may enter up to three photos in as many categories as you like! Please include in your email: Name of the photographer, your pet’s name(s) and what you love most about your Animal Valentine. Please make sure photos are well-focused, sharp images in high resolution.
Photo Categories: * Don’t Worry, Be Happy – happiest pet
* Cutest Pet
* Golden Oldies (senior pets)
* Best Friends Forever BFFs (more than one animal in photo) * Pets and their People
The winners in each category will be honored with a $25 donation made in their pet’s name to one of the following local animal rescue/charities of their choice: SCC Humane Society, Kitty Kasa in Sonoita or Whispers Sanctuary in Canelo. Photos must contain domestic pets (no wildlife). Color and Black/White photos are acceptable. No professional photographers please. All photos submitted become shared property of the PRT and may be published in future articles in print or online.
Crossroads Mission Van in Need of Repairs
The Crossroads Mission food van is in need of paint, body work and a major tune up. The van makes daily trips to pick up donated food from grocery stores and other food outlets to feed the over 60-90 people in dire need daily receiving meals at the Mission. The van is a 2011 Chevy Express Refrigerated Cargo Van with 151,589 miles. On average the van makes two trips daily.
Crossroads Mission Nogales is a Christ-centered non-profit shelter providing help, hope, compassionate care and recovery to disadvantaged men, women and families who are homeless, addicted, and/or involved in domestic violence. The shelter provides housing, food, resources and recovery programs to those in need.

The Elgin Community Club offers two $1000 scholarships for 2024 graduating seniors living in the Sonoita, Elgin and Patagonia area. Students attending Patagonia HS can pick up an application from Mr. Michael Young. Students attending other high schools can contact Ginny Cosbey at 520-820-6155 or email at gcosbey@yahoo.com for an application form or any questions you might have about the scholarships. Applicants eligible for the grant need to plan to attend a university, community college or trade school. Applications are due April 12, 2024. The Los Charros Foundation 2024 Academic Scholarship application is live and we are excited for the opportunities we are able to provide graduating seniors in Southern Arizona. The Los Charros Foundation supports academic scholarships to four-year universities, two-year community college as well as any trade or vocational school. John Kendall Sponsors a Ben Carson Reading Room

The grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting of Arizona’s first Ben Carson Reading Room took place Dec. 8, 2016 at Patagonia Montessori Elementary School. Kendall, the grandson of John Henry Cady—an early Arizona pioneer, soldier and builder of the Patagonia Hotel—was in attendance.

The PRT is published on the first Friday of every month (except July and September) and is available at these distribution points while supplies last.
Submitting Community Events to the PRT
The PRT is committed to sharing details and information about upcoming community events with our readers at no cost in our weekly e-newsletter. Due to the large number of submissions, the PRT will no longer be able to post each and every poster in our newsletter. We will share a link to your event page or poster, or a brief description of each event. Each week we will post one or two event flyers. Please share your events via email at least one week prior to the event date. Poster submissions require a JPEG format along with a brief typed description about the event in your email to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Monday, 5pm.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Paton Center in Patagonia have expanded! Help restore habitat for birds every 1st & 3rd Wednesday, now through April! 10am-12pm. Volunteers will help remove invasive Johnsongrass and other problem species near the Paton house with some opportunities for planting native grasses. The Food Pantry in Sonoita is in need of donations such as proteins, canned chicken breast in particular, also low on peanut butter and jelly and beef stew. They also have a freezer now so can accept frozen goods. Please contact Joy at the Corner Scoop for donation drop off times. They are also accepting dog food now.

Community Employment Opportunities
The Santa Cruz Humane Society is looking to hire a cat kennel worker. Must like cats, must be able to lift around 30 lbs (bags of litter and cat food), and no allergies to cats. Job does require a lot bending and kneeling. Wednesday to Sunday with 34 hours weekly and possibility of making 40 hours weekly. Job includes – cleaning, showing cats to potential adopters, give medication to sick cats, and socialize with cats.
