Forest Service Maintenance at Remediated Mines Near Patagonia
Patagonia, Ariz., June 26, 2023 —The Coronado National Forest will begin maintenance at four previously remediated mine sites on June 27, 2023. The Marstellar Mine, Endless Chain Mine, and Morning Glory Mine are located in the Harshaw area, 10 miles south of the town of Patagonia off of Harshaw Creek Road (NFSR 49). The Three R Mine is located south of Patagonia in Three R Canyon off NFSR 215.
Environmental remediation occurred at these sites between 2020 and 2021 to address mine waste containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Maintenance at the remediated areas will address erosion and lack of vegetation. Heavy equipment may be present in these areas, the public is reminded to drive with caution on Forest Roads.

“Hi, I’m Jonathan Hasenstab. I’m an undergraduate senior at the University of Arizona, and I’m doing a groundwater study in Elgin as part of my senior thesis. I’ve been getting in contact with well owners in Elgin in the hopes of collecting water samples this summer. I was wondering if folks living in or around the Elgin area might be interested in letting us sample from their private wells, or who may know neighbors living in the area who are interested in doing the same. We will collect water samples from an outside faucet closest to the well prior to any water treatment, and those who agree to let us sample from their wells will be informed of the results of our analysis once we analyze the samples at the University of Arizona. For more details or if you would be interested in working with us, please call us or email 520-274-9642, “hasenstabj@arizona.edu”
