The PRT Newsletter for the Week of January 18, 2023
Look to the Stars
By Harold Meckler Starting January 21, when we will have a moonless sky, and lasting for several days afterward, there’s a chance to see a once-in-a-lifetime event. Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF, at about 26 million miles away, will be making its closest approach to us on its 50,000-year journey around the sun. Dubbed the Green Comet, it will be moving northeast to north “below” the Big Dipper beginning near the “handle” and, as the week progresses, closer to the “pot.” It may not be visible with the naked eye, but a pair of binoculars may be all the magnification one needs.
Exposure to sunlight causes the comet’s chemical compounds to glow green. If it is bright enough, it will appear like a smudge, rather than a distinct point of light. The best time of day for observation is before dawn, when the Big Dipper is highest in the sky. In the evening, look for the dipper and the roughly half-mile wide comet close to the northern horizon.

Remember When???
The PRT has been hard at work placing online hundreds of articles, photographs, artwork and poems from past years’ print editions of the PRT. Take a walk down memory lane with this 2016 piece by Ann Katzenbach from the PRT archives…
Dogwalk
By Ann Katzenbach
January 6, 2016
Early each morning I take my dog Lucy for a walk. This is my favorite time of year for a morning walk, when the days are short and the sun is low in the southern sky.
Upcoming Community Events
Remember to check out and add any upcoming events to our NEW community calendar!
The Patagonia ‘Music People’ are looking for some participants who like to sing, can read music and would like to help us make some pretty noise for the locals! Also, if you would like to play your oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, harmonica, drums or other instrument, there may be a spot for you to accompany the voices. We are a friendly, fun group and there are small ensembles that could use your help. This isn’t the Mormon Tabernacle but we do our best! Just email me, Pat McNamara donkgal@gmail.com and let’s see what pretty music we can make!

POWWOW in Sonoita, AZ is always on the third Saturday of the month. At the same time, we have Farmers Marketside Venders as usual this month.
