The PRT Newsletter for the Week of August 17, 2022

Community Calendar

The Patagonia Regional Times is pleased to offer our new Calendar of Community Events on our website. The community calendar is designed for individuals, non-profit organizations, local businesses, and government entities to publicize meetings and events that may be of interest to the community and to promote community events and activities. See online form here. Your text, photos and fliers all can be posted on the calendar.

Each announcement should include complete information on the event, who sponsors it, what it is, dates, times and location, and a local phone number and contact person for further information. If your event requires a registration, the deadline date for registration should be conspicuous so that the deadline will be announced as well as the event. Click here to read our guidelines.

E-Newsletter

We will continue to publicize events in our e-newsletter as well. The PRT may edit event content for length, corrections, text, etc. We do not post any notices in the PRT Newsletter for events that are more than three weeks away. Flyers for nonprofits, community organizations and fundraisers will be accepted. Submissions and or questions should be in email form or a word document to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Tuesday, 10 a.m. For more in-depth questions about calendar listings, please call 740-206-9594.

By Marion Vendituoli

“Many of our kids showed at SAILA for the first time and many received call backs for showmanship and market divisions,” Mustang Club 4-H leader Dusti Prentice wrote. “We had kids from Rattlesnakes [4-H Club] and Mustangs in all species and categories from peewee, junior, intermediate and senior divisions.”

“The Southern Arizona International Livestock Association (SAILA) continues to work towards the advancement of junior exhibitors in the state of Arizona and the Southwest, not only promoting youth education and leadership, but also providing a place in every area of the state where a junior exhibitor can gain valuable experience before exhibiting an animal at a major show,” according to the SAILA website.

Journalism On Display at The Tin Shed Theater

Photo by Eugenio del Bosque Todd Miller and Melissa del Bosque record their podcast for The Border Chronicle in the Tin Shed Theater in front of a live audience.

By Maggie Urgo

August in Patagonia doesnโ€™t usually lend itself to crowds at events, but Saturday afternoon on August 6 saw a good crowd turn out at the Tin Shed Theater for โ€œA Peek Behind The Curtain.โ€

Billed as an opportunity to watch the creation of a podcast, it delivered. Not only was the audience able to watch Todd Miller and Melissa del Bosqueโ€™s sound man recording an interview with Erick Meza of the Sierra Club Borderlands, they were able to participate. The mike was passed around to various very engaged audience members for questions and comments, some of which will be included in the final edited podcast on The Border Chronicle.

After the event, a Voices From The Border spokesperson noted that the organization was thrilled to be part of this working collaboration between environmental, humanitarian and journalistic endeavors. She hopes to see more such working collaborations in the future, to have border groups amplify their voices together, projecting ever more loudly voices and issues from the border.

Fish Consumption Advisory Issued for Patagonia Lake

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD), in coordination with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), is issuing a fish consumption advisory for flathead catfish caught from Patagonia Lake in Santa Cruz County.

This advisory is based on recent analyses of fish tissue data that indicate elevated levels of mercury. ADEQ recommends that adults limit consumption of flathead catfish from Patagonia Lake to 2.5 ounces (uncooked weight) per week and children 12 and younger limit consumption to 2 ounces (uncooked weight) per month. For more information, click here.

FREE CPR & FIRST AID TRAINING

CPR is an emergency procedure that can help save a person’s life if their breathing or heart stops. There will also be a training in the use of a defibrillator, an electronic device that applies an electric shock to restore the rhythm of a heart, when the irregular contractions of its muscle fibers result in a lack of synchronicity between heartbeat and pulse.

The training will be five hours long and will be held on a Saturday (the exact day to be announced.)
