Stinknet – A Fast Growing Problem

By Ben Parry-Lemon Stinknet is a noxious yellow-colored weed found throughout Southern Arizona, including Santa Cruz County, and is causing big problems for our native plants. Click here to read more about this invasive weed.


Two Lobos Receive All-Region Baseball Honors

PUHS senior infielder Arturo Magallanes (pictured above) has been named to the 1A South All-Region baseball team for 2024. Magallanes led the Lobos with a .610 batting average, 25 hits, 22 runs scored, 20 stolen bases and 14 runs batted in. PUHS junior Johnny Fields, a pitcher and infielder, earned honorable mention. Fields had a .326 batting average and scored 13 runs for Patagonia. — Dave Lumia

Deep Dirt Farm Gets Internet Funding Kickstart

A successful Kickstarter campaign and a recent Fish & Wildlife grant will fund future infrastructure and workshop projects at the 34-acre permaculture farm in Stevens Canyon. It’s all part of a ‘many hands, few dollars’ model, led by Deep Dirt founder Kate Tirion, that’s brought together thousands of volunteers in learning, hands-on, how to create a resilient and regenerative world.

Submitting Events to the PRT

The PRT is committed to sharing details and information about upcoming community events with our readers at no cost in our weekly e-newsletter. We will share a link to your event page or poster, or a brief description of each event. Please share your events via email at least one week before the event date. Poster submissions require a JPEG format along with a brief typed description about the event in your email to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Monday, 5pm.

The Patagonia Senior Center recently received a grant from Delta Dental of Phoenix to help seniors with dental expenses. Vouchers are provided for up to $350 to participating dentists. If interested, please call the senior center at (520) 394-2494.

Volunteer Opportunity – Friends of Sonoita Creek will be honoring Patagonia Veterans at the Patagonia Cemetery. Please join us and the community to place flags on Veterans’ graves on May 26 at 9am and the flag raising on May 27 at 9am.

Patagonia Museum Upcoming Events – The Patagonia Museum will host a workday at the Lochiel Schoolhouse on Friday, May 24, from 10 am to 2 pm. Please bring water, lunch and gloves.The Patagonia Museum will meet on May 25, at 2pm in the Patagonia Public Library. Marshall Beaty, author of “The Grant El Grante”, a book of short stories about growing up in Patagonia from 1944 to 1964 will be the guest speaker. Marshall is the son of early Patagonia residents Rita and Chapo Beaty. Chapo served with the Arizona Rangers in the early 1900’s. The Museum has joined the Jim Click Millions for Tucson Raffle fundraiser. The grand prize is a 2024 Jeep Wrangler.100% of proceeds sold by the Patagonia Museum will benefit the museum. Patagonia Volunteer Fire and Rescue Annual Steak Fry 2024
Celebrating our 100th year of service to our community, the 47th Annual PVFR Steak Fry will be held at the town park on Sat., June 29, 4:30pm. The meal will be a steak off our famous custom-built grill, beans, coleslaw, salsa, tortilla and drink for $25.00 – Kids meals (under 15- $15.00) will substitute a hamburger for the steak. There will be a live auction, a raffle, and dancing to live music by Nightlife. Raffle tickets can be purchased from PVFR members in advance or at the event- $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.
