Sandhill Cranes in Southeast Arizona

Photos by Sally Reichardt Sonoita resident Sally Reichardt took a recent day trip to witness the migration stop of the sandhill cranes on the marshland of Whitewater Draw. Bird lovers, wildlife buffs, and residents of southeastern Arizona marvel at the descent of tens of thousands of cranes to the protected march area. The cranes usually stay at Whitewater Draw from roughly Oct. through sometime in March. The area is about 600 acres of protected land managed by The Arizona Game and Fish Department. Sandhill cranes fly south seeking warmer weather during the winter months, to rest from their breeding season.
