Something Special in the Sky

One thing that makes our community truly amazing is the night skies and spectacular stargazing. This evening, make sure to step outside and take a look up in the sky to witness the rare Super Blue Moon. Tonight’s rising moon will be the second of two full moons occurring in the month of August, known as a ‘blue moon,” which typically happens every two to three years. During a “super moon,” the Moon’s orbit is closest to the Earth’s orbit making the moon appear slightly brighter and larger than average. The combination of both a blue moon and a super moon together in one night only occurs on average, every 10 years. The next Super Blue Moon won’t be until January 2037. And for an added bonus, according to NASA the planet Saturn, just a few days from its closest and brightest for the year, will appear near the moon. As the evening twilight ends, Saturn will be 5 degrees to the upper right of the moon and will appear to swing clockwise around the moon as the evening progresses.

In Memory of Windmill
By Tina Hamilton
February 2, 2018
In 2011, a crisp color photo at the Sonoita post office announced that a dog named Windmill was looking for a forever home. She had been found in the Bradshaw mountains by some hikers who had come across her. She was frightened, dehydrated, and had been bit in the face by a rattlesnake. She had no identification, so she was called “Windmill” after the windmill she was found near.
Submitting Community Events to the PRT
