Historic Rail X Ranch in Patagonia Up for Sale

Contributed Photo The Rail X Ranch in Patagonia, once owned by the Kolbe family, known for their significant contributions to the region and over 23 years of service in the US Congress, has just gone on the market with a listing price of $29,950,000. According to the Multiple Listing Service, the ranch is now the highest priced residential property in the last 30 years in Southern Arizona. The property dates back to the late 1800s and it abuts the Coronado National Forest. Approximately 1700 acres, the property includes 2 barns, a casita, 3 apartments, 3 standalone homes, swimming pool, a private lake and an artesian well, which flows without the need for a mechanical pumping system. The property has retained all its mineral rights.

New Project to Improve Ecosystem Health Along the Sonoita Creek

Tucson Audubon Society managers Jay Snowdon and Cally Wilken are inviting you to be an integral part of their efforts to restore Sonoita Creek to its native SEAZ riparian ecosystem we all love and enjoy.

The Tucson Audubon has launched a multi-year initiative to restore native plant communities along the Sonoita Creek and are seeking community assistance in protecting birds and our shared environment.

The group will be walking Patagonia Wednesday, August 23, knocking on doors, talking with neighbors about the program while offering in-person property walks, free of charge. These evaluations of the ecosystem health of properties adjacent to Sonoita Creek, removal of any invasive plants, (Siberian elm, Tree-of-Heaven, Vinca, and others) along with planting of native plants are all NO COST offerings, thanks to a grant from the State of Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

This project is already underway and will be looking to start work with individual properties sometime in early fall. The project will be ongoing through Dec. 2024. Contact Jay – jsnowdon@tucsonaudubon.org or Cally – cwilken@tucsonaudubon.org or for more information.

A Drink for Our Pollinating Bats

By Clare Bonelli It’s that season again – when the bats empty your hummingbird feeders at night. These are not our local insect eating bats but are pollinator bats that migrate back and forth between Mexico and the northern Sonoran Desert near Tucson. They are the primary pollinators for the Saguaro cacti and agaves. In recent years, they are having a hard time because the agaves that they feed on during migration are being removed for housing, tequila, grazing, etc. Therefore, they feed off hummingbird feeders – unfortunately not very neatly. You can put newspaper or something under your feeders to help with the mess. Since they can drink a lot, if you really want to support them, you can put out a pan of hummer food (1:4 sugar to water) on a stool or railing so they can swoop up to it in addition to filling your feeders nightly and if you can get some light on them, they are fascinating to watch.
