CHOP Celebrates Fair Housing Month

By Elvia Gallaher
When the Patagonia Town Council declared April as National Fair Housing Month, CHOP thought it a perfect opportunity to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act. We did so on the property affectionately named Gopher Field, located on 3rd Ave., between Rothrock and Pennsylvania Avenue gathering as a community. Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP) invited everyone to celebrate Fair Housing Month with a commUNITY pot-luck picnic on Thursday, April 27, 2023.ย ย Patagonians who have been in the area for 30+ years and newly arrived residents joined the outdoor event. The evening included delicious food, good conversations, and outdoor games like cornhole, badminton, horseshoes, and oversized Jenga. Tod C. Bowden, CHOP Board President, welcomed the attendees and shared a few words. One of the main issues many people face in their desire to live in Patagonia is affordable housing.ย Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP), your local grassroots nonprofit, is working on addressing affordable housing issues, by promoting awareness, and partnering with other nonprofits to help low-and-moderate income households. CHOP is raising awareness of and honoring the Act’s purpose of prohibiting discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and family status.ย Together, letโs work on finding the resources, pooling our talents, and developing Gopher Field so that it can be the home of six affordable homes for low-and-moderate households.ย If you’re interested in helping, call (520) 394-9051 or email us at info@chopatagonia.org.

A Note From The Patagonia Museum
The Patagonia Community Cemetery Project is a collaboration between the Patagonia Museum and Doug Gann, a 3D Digital Archaeologist, to utilize a process of three dimensional (3D) digital modeling, digital photography, and oral histories to create an interactive resource of the Patagonia Cemetery and those interred there that can be shared via the Internet and the Patagonia Museum. The primary guiding principle for this effort can be summed up in the word โrespect.โ Respect for the persons interred, respect for the lives these people have led, and respect for the descendants alive today. This effort will not entail any financial liability to the Town of Patagonia and will include a drone survey by Doug Gann over the Patagonia Cemetery with markers embedded in the soil to create coordinates for accuracy and orientation. The Patagonia Museum will coordinate the oral history portion of the project. This effort has been made possible by generous support from Prestamos CDFI and the SCC Forgivable Loan Program. The Patagonia Museum is seeking volunteers to help with this project. If you are interested contact German at 520-343-5641 patagoniamuseumpresident@gmail.com
