The Patagonia Regional Times is proud to announce we were selected as one of six organizations by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and the 2024 Local News Initiative Grants Committee to receive a 2024 Local News Initiative Grant. In total, 18 eligible applications were received from organizations representing several Southern Arizona counties. Click here to read the entire press release.
“Little Rock Star” visits the Paton Center
Tom Brown, Site Manager at the Paton Center for Hummingbirds, recently shared with the PRT exciting news about their annual rock star visitor. “It’s always a great day at the Paton Center for Hummingbirds! In fact, even when it is cold (Everyone knows I hate being cold!), even when it is raining, and yes, even when it is hot, I cherish every day that I get to spend here, one of Patagonia’s most popular locations to visit.” Click here to read more.
Nabhan Speaks Out Against Hermosa Project
Gary Nabhan, an internationally known ethnobotanist and Patagonia resident, wrote a commentary for the February 26, 24 issue of the Arizona Capitol Times calling attention to the massive water use proposed by South32 and urging the state of Arizona to act to preserve this limited resource. He praises Governor Hobbs for blocking the use of groundwater by foreign entities who grow crops in Arizona but points out that the water use by South32’s Hermosa Project could potentially far exceed that of those growers. Local Nature Sanctuary Offers Unique Experience

Vince Pinto and his wife, Claudia Campos-Pinto, have devoted the last 11 years to creating a unique wilderness experience for visitors to their 42-acre nature preserve near Lake Patagonia.

The Elgin Community Club offers two $1000 scholarships for 2024 graduating seniors living in the Sonoita, Elgin and Patagonia area. Students attending Patagonia HS can pick up an application from Mr. Michael Young. The Los Charros Foundation 2024 Academic Scholarship application is for graduating seniors in Southern Arizona. The Los Charros Foundation supports academic scholarships to four-year universities, two-year community college as well as any trade or vocational school. Santa Cruz County COWBELLES Scholarship – Program is now open for the 2024-25 school year. Scholarship provides funding to deserving, recent high school graduating seniors. The number of recipients and amounts of scholarships awarded varies, depending on available funds and number of applicants. Students must carry 12 credit hours per semester and maintain a 2.5 GPA to be eligible. An emphasis will be given to students pursuing studies in courses and careers directly or indirectly related to the cattle industry, however, not required. Must be a resident of Santa Cruz County. You can obtain an application from your school or click here. Deadline is April 15.

The PRT is published on the first Friday of every month (except July and September) and is available at these distribution points while supplies last.
Submitting Community Events to the PRT
The PRT is committed to sharing details and information about upcoming community events with our readers at no cost in our weekly e-newsletter. Due to the large number of submissions, the PRT will no longer be able to post each and every poster in our newsletter. We will share a link to your event page or poster, or a brief description of each event. Each week we will post one or two event flyers. Please share your events via email at least one week prior to the event date. Poster submissions require a JPEG format along with a brief typed description about the event in your email to Nisa Talavera, Assistant Editor at prtasted@gmail.com. All submissions for the Wednesday e-newsletter must be submitted by Monday, 5pm.
Upcoming Community Events
Mar. 8 – 24 – BLM Artist-in-Residence Exhibit at The Empire Ranch – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) invites members of the public to participate in special events this month featuring the work of Alan Nyiri, an accomplished fine art photographer who was recently selected as the Tucson Field Office’s first artist in residence. A selection of Nyiri’s remarkable photographs of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area landscape and historic Empire Ranch buildings will be on display at the Empire Ranch Headquarters gift shop. On Saturday, March 23rd, at 1:00 p.m., Nyiri will present a multimedia exhibit and discuss his photography. Mar. 16: The Elgin/Sonoita Cowbelles will celebrate National Agriculture Day with a booth at the Sonoita Farmer’s Market. There will be free recipes, grilling guides, information on the importance of farming and ranching, Beef By-Products display board and Mystery Box. Merchandise featuring many of the Santa Cruz County Livestock Brands will be available for purchase.

Mar. 21: 10am – The Patagonia Museum will conduct a Highway Cleanup. All volunteers are welcome to join near Highway 82, Milepost 19, and Beaty Lane for a safety briefing.
