Sonoita Elementary School District Superintendent Named Arizona Superintendent of the Year for Small School Districts 

Elgin, AZ — The Sonoita Elementary School District is proud to announce that Superintendent Daniel Erickson has been named the Arizona School Administrators (ASA) Superintendent of the Year for small school districts serving fewer than 1,000 students. 

This prestigious recognition honors outstanding leadership, dedication to students, and a commitment to excellence in public education. The award also marks a milestone year for Erickson, who is celebrating his 30th year in education. 

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition,” Erickson said. “This award reflects the collective efforts of so many people who have supported, mentored, and walked alongside me throughout my career. I am grateful to Arizona School Administrators for their leadership and advocacy for public schools across our state.” 

Erickson expressed gratitude to his family for their unwavering support. “I want to thank my wife, Michele, and my children, Dominic and Jessica, for standing by me as I’ve pursued my calling in education,” he said. 

He also acknowledged the leadership and partnership of the Sonoita Elementary School District Governing Board, including President Harry Dotson, Vice President Nancy Webster, and board members Aaron Thomas, Dave Naugle, and Tony Fennell, as well as former board members Megan Thomas and Ginny Cosbey, who served on the board at the time of his hiring. 

Erickson also recognized the dedicated staff at Elgin Elementary School, stating, “I am incredibly proud to be rowing the boat with such an outstanding team who put students first every day.” 

The superintendent additionally thanked Callie Mattus and Rich Arkanoff for nominating him for the award, calling their confidence and support deeply meaningful. 

Above all, Erickson emphasized his appreciation for public educators statewide. “Every day, educators show up with heart and purpose to ensure excellence in education for all children. This honor reinforces why I believe so deeply in public education and the power of strong teams working together.” 

The Sonoita Elementary School District congratulates Superintendent Erickson on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his continued leadership and service to students, staff, and the community.
