Addie Tomlinson shows her steer at the State Fair in October.

The Arizona State Fair livestock show was a success for Addison Tomlinson, 14, of Sonoita. Addison, who is a member of the Mustangs 4-H Club, placed first in the middleweight class and third overall showing her angus cross steer El Jefe, purchased last winter from Anchor F Cattle Company of Nogales. The class win earned her an invitation to the state livestock sale.

“I knew he wasn’t going to be ready for our county fair,” said Addie. “I was excited to show him at the next level and represent Santa Cruz County at State with a locally bred steer.”

The livestock show took place Oct. 12 – 17 at the State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. Addison spent the five days grooming and prepping her animals for show, practicing showmanship and talking to the public about raising quality animals.

“It was a great experience,” Tomlinson said. “I can’t wait to do it again.”

In addition to her market class win, she placed fourth of 21 in intermediate showmanship and earned a reserve champion title for her commercial heifer, Marzybob, also from Anchor F.
