A Note From The Patagonia Museum
The Patagonia Community Cemetery Project is a collaboration between the Patagonia Museum and Doug Gann, a 3D Digital Archaeologist, to utilize a process of three dimensional (3D) digital modeling, digital photography, and oral histories to create an interactive resource of the Patagonia Cemetery and those interred there that can be shared via the Internet and the Patagonia Museum. The primary guiding principle for this effort can be summed up in the word โrespect.โ Respect for the persons interred, respect for the lives these people have led, and respect for the descendants alive today. This effort will not entail any financial liability to the Town of Patagonia and will include a drone survey by Doug Gann over the Patagonia Cemetery with markers embedded in the soil to create coordinates for accuracy and orientation. The Patagonia Museum will coordinate the oral history portion of the project. This effort has been made possible by generous support from Prestamos CDFI and the SCC Forgivable Loan Program. The Patagonia Museum is seeking volunteers to help with this project. If you are interested contact German at 520-343-5641 patagoniamuseumpresident@gmail.com

May is National Water Safety Month
Letโs take time to review water safety rules as we enter our warm weather season when people will be hitting the pool and the lake. According to the American Red Cross, drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children. “It only takes a moment. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line or apply sunscreen. Death and injury from drownings happen every day in home pools and hot tubs, at the beach or in oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams, bathtubs, and even buckets.โ The Red Cross also recommends the following layers of protection around water: * Even if lifeguards are present, you (or another responsible adult) should stay with your children. * Be a โwater watcherโ – provide close and constant attention to children you are supervising – avoid distractions including cell phones. * Teach children to always ask permission to go near water. * Children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boaters should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Avoid bathing suits for young children in the color blue. * Fence pools and spas with adequate barriers * Always swim with a buddy (even if you are a strong swimmer). * Donโt use alcohol or drugs * Ensure that the whole family learns how to swim. Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP) Celebrates Fair Housing Month
By Elvia Gallaher
Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP), your local grassroots nonprofit, invites you to celebrate Fair Housing Month with us in April. Join CHOP in a culminating community potluck celebration on Thursday, April 27, at Gopher Field starting at 5:30 pm. The informal event will consist of games, food, and an informational chat. Gopher Field, our Community Land Trust property, is located in front of the senior housing complex and next to the Catholic church on 3rd Ave. Bring your blankets, chairs, a goodie to share with your neighbors, and your good spirits. A brief history on Fair Housing Month: The Fair Housing Act was signed in 1968 by President Johnson, after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Act forbids discrimination in the rental, sale, and financing of houses based on color, race, and gender. The Patagonia Town Council voted that April is Fair Housing Month in our community. We acknowledge and support the idea that we should be free of any form of discrimination in buying a house and that we welcome people of diverse backgrounds as our neighbors.
We invite you to come to share a meal on the property that is the future home of six affordable housing units. For questions, call Tod C. Bowden, CHOP Board President at (520) 394-9051.
