4-H Members Learn Forging Skills

Contributed photo A 4-H Club member starts to shape her knife from a horseshoe under the guidance of J. Ritchie.
Contributed photo Smithy J. Ritchie describes the process of forging a knife to members of the Mustang 4-H Club. By Cami Schlappy and Dusti Prentice Mustangs 4-H Club had an unique opportunity to learn knife smithing with a coal forge. Smithy J. Ritchie (known from the tv series, Forged in Fire) came to Sonoita with his 14 years of experience as a forger, teacher, and showman to demonstrate the making of a homemade forge from a wheelbarrow, shop vac and coal. He guided the young knife smiths in forging a blade from half a horseshoe. Each participant ended their hour and a half session with their very own knife quenched in water using coal fire, hammers, an anvil and a belt sander to finish the edge. Smithy plans to return for additional classes to build on the skills learned from this event.

No PVFR Steak Fry This Year

By Justin McEldowney

The members of Patagonia Fire & Rescue have decided to pass this year on what has annually been its biggest fundraising event. We didnโ€™t start planning soon enough to run a successful event this June. Last yearโ€™s Steak Fry was well received and we hope our next effort will improve on that. Weโ€™ll be celebrating our 100 year anniversary. To read the entire message from the Patagonia Fire & Rescue, click here.
