Recent Ringtail Sighting at BRN Wildlife Preserve

Watershed Restoration Program Coordinator, Aspen Theis, for Borderlands Restoration Network shared with the PRT this week, “We recently captured images of a ringtail, which is really exciting as they are rare to see and only the second time we’ve seen them on the Borderlands Wildlife Preserve cameras. The ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is sometimes misleadingly called a ringtail-cat or miner’s cat. While they may have the agility of a cat and have been known to make their dens in mining shafts, they belong to the sameย family as raccoons and coatisย known as the procyonids. The ringtail can be seen throughout the Southwest, as far north as Oregon and east as Oklahoma. They live in dens located in tree hollows, rocky canyon walls, and caves. It was named the Arizona State Mammal in 1986 and is common in places like Saguaro National Park, but they are quite secretive. While it has a wide range and is listed as a species of least concern, they are rare to see in the wild for aย few reasons. More similar in size to a squirrel, they only weigh about 1 to 2 pounds. And unlike coatis who can form bands of 10 or more individuals, the ringtail is largely solitary.ย With a long black and white ringed tail, semi-retractable claws, and hind feet that can rotate 180 degrees, their incredible climbing skills make them tough to spot amongst the trees. They are also nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. Both instances when they have been photographed at BWP have been at night.”ย
