The PRT Newsletter for the Week of December 21, 2022

It’s so hard to believe that there are only ten days left in 2022! Here at the Patagonia Regional Times, this also means that there are only 1o days left for us to raise $2763 before the end of our annual fundraising campaign. Our generous supporters have donated $24,237 so far, but we need to raise a total of $27,000 to reach our fundraising goal.
The funding we raise during NewsMatch will set us up for 2023 – sustaining the kind of journalism that you’ve come to expect from us and making possible some new ventures. Each month it costs the PRT more than $9000 to offer, free of charge to our readers, our monthly print edition, our weekly e-newsletter and our continually updated website.
But without the generous donations of our readers, there would be no PRT, there would be no local news, no breaking news, no wildfire alerts, no letters to the editor, no features on new businesses like Queen of Cups in Patagonia or Butter My Biscuits in Sonoita, or on local nonprofit activities, no obituaries, no reporting on the Hermosa Project, no school events, no homecoming pictures, no student profiles – in short, no shared voice for our community. Please help us to continue to serve you by making your tax deductible donation before December 31.

Press Release
December 20, 2022 Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors Selects Ana “Anita” Moreno as the Santa Cruz County Recorder, Effective Jan. 1, 23
On December 20, 2022, at the regular Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board voted to appoint Ana “Anita” Moreno as the new Santa Cruz County Recorder, effective January 1, 2023. Ms. Moreno was appointed to replace Santa Cruz County Suzanne “Suzie” Sainz who is retiring on December 31, 2022.
The incoming County Recorder Anita Moreno said, “I am very honored that the Board of Supervisors have confidence in me for this position. The County Recorder’s position to record documents is of course very important, but my focus is to be an impartial party and take voter registration and hit it head on, and get voters to actually go to the polls, to do early ballot voting, whatever the desire to vote is. I feel like it’s a shame that this county is the lowest in the state, probably in the nation for voter turnout and I would like to make a difference.”
Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bruce Bracker said, “ I would like to thank the five candidates who came in for an interview. It takes a certain type of person to put their name into the public venue for public service. Anita has the community engagement and the qualifications that can lead the office over the next two years.”
A Holiday Message Regarding Winter Viruses
In my professional life I was a nurse, and with that lens, I share a word of caution and some recommendations as we gather with family and friends during the next few weeks. It is likely that you know someone who has recently contracted either COVID or influenza (flu). In December there has been an increase in both diseases in the US. The biggest risks are for the very old and the very young. Many hospitals are full, with rising cases of COVID, flu and also childhood RSV patients. COVID cases rates, hospitalizations and deaths are increasing. An average of 408 people in the US are dying each day from COVID. Arizona deaths have increased 161% in the last two weeks. Flu cases are at “high” or “very high” in most states; in Arizona we are “very high”.
We at the PRT share these reminders of what you can do to minimize risk.
· If you have cold or respiratory symptoms, please stay at home.
· If you gather in someone’s home, maximize ventilation by being outdoors, or opening windows and doors.
· If you feel a mask is appropriate, choose a good quality one (N95).
· If you haven’t gotten your annual flu shot or your COVID booster, do it now. you can also order your free home COVID tests (four tests per household starting this week). They are available online at covid.gov/tests or by phone at 800-232-0233. Wishing you all a SAFE and joyous holiday season.

Imagination Library Available in Our Community
Families with young children in many Arizona communities can now register for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that mails free books to children every month, from birth to age 5. Visit ImaginationLibrary.com/check-availability/ to register your child to receive free books. Dolly Parton created the Imagination Library program to inspire kids to love to read. Children registered for the Imagination Library program receive a free, age-appropriate, hiqh-quality children’s book by mail every month until age 5. “In the beginning, my hope was simply to inspire the children in my home county,” said Dolly, “but here we are today with a worldwide program that gives a book a month to well over 1 million children.”

The Smallest Violin
By Rhonda Brew
November 6, 2014
Dan Dalton, known to Patagonians as “Miner Dan,” passed away in September. The “smallest violin” was the most wonderful, magical gift he gave me one day after he came home from the hospital.
