As the current humanitarian crisis continues at US/Mexico border cities, refugees and asylum seekers are more than ever in need of housing and medical assistance while they await safe passage into the US.
Voices For Voices will host “CELEBREMOS!”, a “friend-raiser” for the humanitarian aid group, Voices From The Border, on Saturday, July 8 from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. at Cady Hall, 346 Duquesne Avenue, Patagonia, AZ.
CELEBREMOS! honors the birthdate of Frida Kahlo, artist and activist, whose physical disabilities did not hinder her to becoming a world-renowned icon for the feminist movement, the Latino community, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Event-goers will each receive a handmade floral headband —inspired by the style of Frida—to wear at the event and to hold onto as a keepsake. Guests are also encouraged to dress in the style of Frida and Diego.
Event-goers will enjoy home-style Mexican food, delicious drinks, and dancing with a live Latin dance music band.
“Voices from the Border provides safe, comfortable housing for asylum-seeking women and children, free medical care to those who wouldn’t have access, and other basic humanitarian aid for those who need it”, said India Aubry, President. “We collaborate with individuals and organizations based in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico to serve this extremely vulnerable community as they wait to be allowed into the US.”
“Our goal for hosting CELEBREMOS! is to help create more awareness and support of the good work that Voices From The Border brings to the asylum seeker and refugee families that are currently living at the Sonora, Mexico border,” said Christy Martin. “Celebrating Frida—an exemplar of freedom, feminism, tolerance, and pride in one’s own heritage—seemed an obvious choice to help in the creation and promotion of CELEBREMOS!.”
Prices for the Celebremos! event are $25 pp and $40 per couple for a full evening, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Tickets will be available for purchase on and after June 1 at the Patagonia Trading Post, 317 McKeown Ave,
Patagonia, AZ 85624. (520) 394-2100
Also available at the door will be a limited number of entry tickets for $10 pp for a drink and dancing, from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m.
