Across the Divide

The Strangest Love Affair

By Elizabeth Bernays

Nothing prepared Liz, the academic scientist (with a background in Australia and UK) for Linda, the quick-witted eighth-grade dropout from Texas excelling in malapropisms and outlandish jokes. Linda was still married and Liz a grieving widow. How could they sustain a relationship when they had such different personalities, backgrounds, and interests?

But despite obvious incompatibilities, their chemistry was undeniable, and the extraordinary contrast was exciting for both of them. Slowly, their shared love of nature, carefree RV trips, and travel abroad brought them ever closer. Maybe, they realized, they were more alike than they thought, as each pondered their love of being rebels. Maybe their differences were to be celebrated rather than overcome.

With humor and heart, “Across the Divide: The Strangest Love Affair reveals how possibilities unfold when we open ourselves to unlikely opportunities.”

Holding the Line

A Fireman’s Tale

By M.T. McGuire

“It’s 1980 and the City of Chicago is in peril. The local Firefighters Union has gone on strike against the City in the middle of winter. The union strikers have decided to let inner-city fires burn. Worse, there is a striker arsonist in the mix.

Lieutenant Dennis McGuire and a ragtag crew of firefighters scabs remain loyal to the City. They will do whatever it takes to prevent innocent lives from being lost. The firefighter SCABS have the odds stacked against them going against the powerful union. But nothing will stop the SCABS from Holding the Line.”

M.T. McGuire has been a structure firefighter, a wildland firefighter, a volunteer firefighter, and an all-hazards national emergency responder for over 30 years. Over the course of his noteworthy career, McGuire has served on numerous local, state, and federal agencies.

He also serves as an All-Emergency-All Hazard Operations Chief on national disasters.

McGuire lives in Patagonia, AZ.
