A lightning strike ignited a fire on the Babocomari Ranch in Elgin at approximately 2.20p.m on Friday, July 22.
The fire burned 13.5 acres before heavy rain and the efforts of Sonoita Elgin Fire District (SEFD) personnel were able to extinguish it.
No structures were damaged by the fire, which burned mostly grass and yucca. Seven firefighters from SEFD, as well as personnel from Patagonia Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.
“It’s a good reminder that even with a good rain, the fuels in our area can still dry out and be ready to burn within hours or in a couple of days,” said SEFD Capt. Emma Laird.
